While researching and reading up on this topic there was a fairly recent conversation on SEJ where they cover a discussion with John Meuller on affiliate links within the content and if there are issues with how many.

Basically, Google replied back with there was no issue with having lots of affiliate links when the main content adds value to the web overall, to me, this means not just duplicating the other posts’ content, but bringing YOU and a new angle into it.

This means overall you can place as many affiliate links as you care for without a worry about penalties, but you need to be unique and valuable, many affiliate builders forget this key point.

Mueller clarifies that Google isn’t trying to send a message that affiliate links are bad. They’re perfectly fine, provided they’re placed within useful content:

There is no limit. From our side it’s not that we’re saying that affiliate links are bad or problematic. It’s more a matter of, well, you actually need to have some useful content on your page as well. So that’s kind of the angle that we take there. The amount of affiliate links that you have on a site is totally irrelevant. The ratio of links to article length is also totally irrelevant.

More he spoke to the reason why Google would choose to show a site in the SERP because it has valuable content people are searching for, I know, not life-changing detail there!

After this, he basically said wasting time gaming or “optimizing” links outside the rel=”sponsored” tagging is a waste of time and effort for a website owner.

“But, essentially, what we need to find is a reason to show your site in search for users who are looking for something. And that reason is usually not the affiliate link but the actual content that you provide on those pages. So from that point of view, trying to optimize the affiliate links or trying to hide the affiliate links, or whatever you’re trying to do there, I think is almost wasted effort because that’s not what we care about.”

Google won’t rank a page if it doesn’t think the content is good. It doesn’t matter if there are lots of links or none at all.

He basically said that if you copy what a store has on its website, it will be difficult to rank high in search results, Google isn’t looking for repeated non-unique information.

“What we care about is the content and kind of why we would show your pages in the first place. And if the content of your page is essentially a copy of a description from a retailer’s site then there’s no reason for us to show your site even if you had no affiliate links. So you really need to first have that reason to be visible in the search results. And then how you monetize your site, or what links you place there, that’s essentially irrelevant.”
